Finally, Here I am, back from a sensational 10 day vacation. I will share my “local” (Florida and Lesser Antilles) recipes soon on this blog. But I have to admit that I missed my blog, even though it is not a bad thing to unhook from it for a while.

As promised before I left, my review about “Les Ombres”, the restaurant on top of the New Branly Museum in Paris.

Finalement me voici de retour après 10 jours de vacances fabuleuses. Je vous ferai partager mes découvertes culinaires locales (Floride, Petites Antilles) dans mes prochains billets. En attendant, je dois dire que mon petit blog m’a bien manqué, mais c’est tout de même agréable de « décrocher » un peu…

Comme promis avant mon départ, une revue détaillée et illustrée de mon déjeuner aux « Ombres », le restaurant du musée des Arts Primitifs au Quai Branly (voir en bas de page pour la version française).

The Food

I was quite stunned to learn, after my lunch there, that “Les Ombres” was belonging to Elior, a catering company, #3 in european food service market, because frankly, it was something we would have never guessed, given the quality of the food. They also own the restaurants of both Louvre and d’Orsay Museums.

It is obvious, though, that there is a Real Chef in the kitchen, Arno Busquet. Do not expect michelin starred cuisine here, but “simply” a very good and tasty meal, well presented, with the most beautiful view on the Eiffel Tower. We were 4 (2 Americans, 1 Canadian and 1 French) and we were all very happy with our restaurant choice.

In details :

ü As a savory amuse-bouche, we were served the most adorable mini triangular gingerbread and foie gras sandwiches.Gingerbread and foie gras : always a good pair.

ü Appetizers : I had a bread-crusted "oeuf mollet" (egg simmered in water for a few minutes), with grated pequillos, fresh herbs and spicy sauce : delicious, egg cooked to the perfection, very tasty sauce.

Other appetizer served at our table : Shrimps, citrus fruits and avocado mousse served in a vodka glass. My friend Doug found it very refreshing and tasty, and thought that the avocado was matching well with the bitterness of the citrus fruits. To note : some pine nuts too, that added a pleasant crunchy sensation.

ü Main dishes : A braised quail with aniseed honey, sauteed leeks and bite-size potatoes for me. When I saw the quail, I thought “too small for me” but actually, it was truly “fleshy” ! Plenty to eat in it !

Other main dish served at our table : sauteed lamb with coconut milk andlime, served with a fruit and vegetables quinoa (kind of couscous). My friend Luc seemed to be very happy with his choice !

ü Desserts : blood orange jelly, with grapefruit granité (kind of very light sherbet) and a beautiful tuile. Very light and fresh, a real girlie dessert ! For the “boys” (yes, I was the only female “on board”!) : a pinch of nostalgy with a “grand-Ma” coffee religieuse (coffee cream puff) on top of a biscuit , served with a coffee sauce.

ü Coffee (good) served with a selection of adorable sweet amuses-bouches : jelly fruits, bite-size chocolate cupcakes, and mini-cannelés.

The Wine

All I remember, is that it was a red wine with a very pleasant chocolatey taste ! ~~Please Doug or Luc, help me !~~ I got the info : it was a Croze Hermitage Rouge !

The Decor/The Guests

Both business and residentials. Some tourists too. The decor has been designed by the famous French architect Jean Nouvel. It is simply magical, modern without being cold (dark wood furniture). All thought to the smallest detail with the Eiffel Tower herself as a special guest. The framework of the roof top is directly inspired of that of the ET, as well as the decoration on the plates ! To be noted : The plates are designed by the Famous Thomas Keller himself (Chef of “The French Laundry” in California and “Per Se” in NYC).

Have I mentionned the view ? For me it is the best you can find on the Eiffel Tower. I mean, really. But you also have an amazing perspective on the Seine River with its Bateaux-mouches, on the Trocadero and on Montmartre too ! In the evening, this place must be truly magical with the sparkling Iron Lady. We have been told that the lights inside the restaurant are dim at night so you can truly enjoy the views.

The Service

Pleasant surprise despite some difficulty to describe a few dishes.Not too slow, not too fast service. We even had the priviledge of being served the sweet amuse-bouches twice because the waiter was in a good mood (that is what he told us).

The Cost

Prix fixed menu for lunch : 37 euros/person

For dinner : 99 euros/person.

Much more expensive if you choose « a la carte » dishes.

Definitely worth the price for lunch..

The meu changes twice a month and you can choose among 4 starters, 4 main dishes and 4 desserts. More than enough ! Have a look at Les Ombres , click on « la carte » then on « menu de saison ».

Dans l’assiette

J’ai été très surprise d’apprendre à posteriori que le restaurant appartenait au groupe Elior, société de restauration collective, car franchement cela ne se sentait pas du tout…Ils gèrent également les restaurants du Louvre et du Musée d’Orsay. Bon, il y a quand même un vrai Chef aux commandes : Arno Busquet. Le repas était vraiment bon, sans pour autant être de la haute gastronomie. Tout était goûteux, bien servi et bien présenté. Les portions n’étaient pas gigantesques, mais nous sommes tout de même ressortis plus que rassasiés.

En détail :

ü En amuses-bouche salé, de ravissants mini sandwiches de pain d’épices et foie gras très frais. Une belle association.

ü Les entrées : Pour moi : œuf mollet en croûte de pain, piquillos et pois gourmands aux herbes, jus corsé : c’était vraiment délicieux, l’œuf cuit à la perfection, bien charnu et les piquillos et le jus corsé étaient très parfumés.

Autre entrée servie à notre table : Verrine fraîcheur de grosses crevettes, chiffonnade, agrumes et mousse légère d’avocat : selon mon ami Doug : très frais et goûteux, association réussie entre la douceur de l’avocat et l’amertume des agrumes. Il y avait même des pignons de pins qui ajoutaient un croustillant agréable.

ü Les plats : Pour moi : Caille braisée au miel d’anis, fondue de poireaux et pommes grenailles confites, très joliment présentée en crapaudine. J’avais un peu peur de n’avoir pas grand-chose à me mettre sous la dent, mais en fait le volatile était charnu !!

Autre plat servi à notre table : Sauté d’agneau au lait de coco et citron vert, quinoa aux fruits et légumes croquants. Mon ami Luc avait l’air ravi.

ü Les Desserts : Pour moi : Transparence d’orange sanguine, granité au pamplemousse servi avec une tuile. C’était super léger et très frais, un dessert de fille quoi ! Pour les garçons (et oui, j’étais la seule fille avec 3 garçons !) : un peu de nostalgie avec le choix d’une religieuse à l’ancienne au café, sablé croquant et sauce café. Ils en avaient presque les larmes aux yeux, dis donc…

ü Avec le café (bon et servi dans une tasse très originale) , des petits amuses-bouches sucrés tout à fait convenables : mini cannelés , petites pâtes de fruits rouges et mini-coques de chocolat à la crème de chocolat.

Dans le Verre

Tout ce dont je me souviens, c’est que le vin (rouge) avait un arrière-goût de chocolat très agréable, ~~mais ce n’est pas moi qui l’ai commandé donc impossible de le nommer !!~~ ~~Doug, si tu lis ce message, aide-moi !~~ J'ai eu l'info : c'était un Croze Hermitage Rouge !

Autour de nous

Clientèle très variée : affaires, particuliers, quelques touristes.

Le décor, signé Jean Nouvel, est tout simplement magnifique, moderne sans être froid (mobilier brun foncé) et travaillé dans les moindres détails, avec, en invitée d’honneur, la Grande Dame de Fer. D’ailleurs, l’armature en fer de la verrière est directement inspirée de celle de la Tour Eiffel et les jeux d’ombres et de lumière qui se reflètent dans le restaurant sont spectaculaires. Même les assiettes reprennent ce motif : A noter, les arts de la table sont signés Thomas Keller, célébrissime chef aux USA (« The French Laundry » en Californie and « Per Se » à New York City).

On bénéficie d’une vue imprenable, non seulement sur la Tour Eiffel, mais aussi sur le Trocadéro, la Seine et ses bateaux-mouches. Le soir, cela doit être totalement magique avec la Tour Eiffel éclairée et clignotante et les lumières de la ville…

Le Sourire ou la Grimace

Là, c’était plutôt le sourire, malgré quelques approximations dans l’explication du menu. Le service n’était ni trop lent, ni trop rapide, et nous avons même eu droit à une seconde assiette d’amuse-bouches sucrés !

Le Porte-Monnaie

Nous avons choisi le menu à prix fixe (entrée-plat-dessert) à 37 euros.

Le soir, le menu est à 99 euros et à la carte c’est bien plus cher.

Pour le déjeuner, un vrai bon rapport qualité-lieu-prix.

Le choix

Le menu de saison change tous les 15 jours et offre un choix parmi 4 entrées, 4 plats, 4 desserts. Amplement suffisant. Menu des Ombres, cliquer sur « la carte » puis « menu de saison ».
