Have you heard about « Les Journées du Patrimoine » ? Every year in mid-september, state properties all over France are opened to the public for the weekend (and for free of course). Created in 1984 by our then Minister of Culture, it has been such a successful event that many European countries have “copied” us ever since.
This year, I wanted to visit something that could be fun for my daughters (4 and 11) and, most importantly, with no lines (count on a 2 hrs line to visit the most popular buildings like the Sénat or the Elysée where our president lives !!) . We chose to visit the Printemps Department Store, or more precisely, to take a guided visit with a historian to show us and comment on the renovation works on the facades and the rotondas. We could actually have access to two rotundas and an old stair which are usually closed to the public. And the nice final touch was to be able to chat with craftmen working on the project (marble workers, mosaic artists, metalworkers and many others). The renovation, started on april 2007, should be achieved by 2010.

Qui n’a rêvé de découvrir les coulisses d’un grand magasin ? Les Journées du Patrimoine, qui ont eu lieu le week-end dernier, m’ont permis de satisfaire ma curiosité, en tous les cas en partie. En fait, la visite guidée était axée sur la rénovation des façades et de deux rotondes, rénovation engagée en avril 2007 et qui devrait s’achever en 2010. Nous avons pu accéder aux 2 rotondes et à certains escaliers, fermés au public. Le thème des journées du Patrimoine étant « les métiers d’art », la présence de certains artisans travaillant sur le chantier (mosaïstes, marbriers, et ouvriers en métallerie d’art) était un « plus » très appréciable.

Some key figures in the History of Le Printemps :

• 1865 : Founded by Jules Jaluzot, the Printemps was designed by Paul Sédille, perfectly executing the modern and daring spirit of its founder. Jules Jazulot was a charismatic man who had the great idea of marrying a very wealthy woman whose « dote » could enable him to finance his ambitious project.

• 1881 : A fire breaks out in the store because of a worker responsible for lighting the gas lantern every morning. The whole building is destroyed and a new one built by architect Paul Sedille.

• 1888 : Printemps, once again ahead of its time, installs a recent and innovative technique : electricity !

• 1907 : Creation of a new store, now known under the name « Printemps de la Mode ».

• 1921 : Another fire ! The building is rebuilt by George Wybo, who also initiated the famous coupola of “ Printemps de la Mode”.

• 1930 to 1961 : Printemps expands again with « Brummel » for the elegant men and with the addition of new storeys in the existing buildings.

• 1975 : The 1865 facade and 1923 cupola become classified historical monuments

The Printemps Renovation Program :

• 2000 to 2006 : All the interiors have been entirely refurbished.
• 2007 to 2010 : All facades and the two rontondas on « rue de charras » will be renovated.

The masonry will be sanded, each stone carefully examined and changed if necessary. The mosaic will have its film of plaster and coating removed and the friezes will be restored.The roofing will be completly removed and remade with new materials in zinc and lead, treated with traditional methods and given a patina.

  

Those windows inside the stairs and on the facade look ordinary but they are extremely expensive and do not explode nor burn in case of fire.

The rotundas ceilings will be repainted by artists and their ceiling lights cleaned and fixed.The stairs will be totally renovated.

At the Elysee Palace, one could also visit for the first time the 2 offices of the president and the gardens.

• 1865 : Création du Printemps par Jules Jaluzot, un homme charismatique et qui a au la bonne idée d’épouser une femme très riche dont la dote lui a permis de lancer ce projet ambitieux .
• 1881 : L’Histoire du Printemps connaît un tournant dramatique : un immense incendie se déclare à cause d’un préposé aux éclairages et l’ensemble du bâtiment est dévasté. Un nouvel édifice est édifié par l’architecte Paul Sedille.
• 1888 : En avance sur son temps et par souci de sécurité, le Printemps installe l’électricité.
• 1907 : Un nouveau magasin est inauguré, connu aujourd’hui sous le nom « Printemps de la Mode
• 1921 : Nouvel incendie et reconstruction par George Wybo, à l’origine de la fameuse coupole du Printemps de la Mode.
• 1930 à 1961 : Création de Brummel (pour l’homme élégant), rajout de niveaux supplémentaires…
• 1975 : La façade et la Coupole sont inscrits à l’Inventaire des Monuments Historiques.

La rénovation extérieure :

• 2000 à 2006 : rénovation des intérieurs de tous les magasins.
• 2007 à 2010 : Rénovation de la totalité des façades et des 2 rotondes de la rue Charras.(voir photos et légendes en anglais).

Visite très intéressante on dirait. Concernant ces mêmes Journées, il y avait également, côté cuisine, la possibilité de découvrir L’Ecole Supérieure de Cuisine Française ou Ecole Grégoire Ferrandi…
